CIS No. 5 ranked Acadia hands Varsity Reds their first loss

FREDERICTON, N.B. – The CIS No. 5 ranked Acadia Axemen gained ground on the undefeated CIS No. 2 UNB Varsity Reds in the AUS men’s hockey standings with a 4-3 overtime shootout win. The Varsity Reds experienced their first loss of the regular season in a game that posted a 21-20 shots on net Acadia advantage in regulation time.

UNB grabbed a quick early lead only 20 seconds into the opening period when Adrian Robertson scored on the UNB man advantage. Acadia’s Joe Gaynor was handed a two minute roughing penalty after only 12 seconds of time came off the clock after the opening faceoff.

Just over five minutes later, AUS All-Star defenceman Chris Owens scored on a one-timer fed by Brett Thompson on the powerplay to tie the game for the first of three times. Before the end of the first frame, V-Red Cam Braes put UNB back in the lead on the third and last powerplay goal of the night.Read more »

Cazzola, Owens and Heelis represent Acadia on FISU Games roster

OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday the Canadian men’s hockey roster for the 2013 Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy.

The 26th biennial Games will run from December 10 to 21, with the men’s hockey gold-medal match set for the final day of competition.

An all-star team comprised entirely of players from the AUS conference will wear the maple leaf jersey on their chests in Trentino.Read more »

Living the dream: Randall force behind Kings sports teams for 30 years

As anyone who has ever played on one knows well, a sports team is made up of many parts, including the ones that aren’t always as noticeable.

For more than 30 years, Chris “Rocky” Randall of Kentville has been an important part of a number of local sports teams, filling a valuable role, usually as trainer or equipment manager. Many of the teams Randall has been a part of have enjoyed their share of regional and even national success.

Randall has two national championship rings earned as trainer and equipment manager of the Acadia hockey Axemen, in 1993 and 1996, and, he says, “probably should have won at least two more” over the years.

He also served as batboy for the national senior baseball champion 1985 Kentville Wildcats, who were inducted Nov. 2 into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in the team category. It was Randall‘s second Sports Hall of Fame induction. He was already a member of the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame, along with the rest of the 1993 hockey Axemen. Someday soon, the 1996 Axemen championship team may be inducted as well.Read more »

Axemen Cazzola scores for team Black

FISU_AUS_MH_logoFREDERICTON, NB, November 8, 2013 – Team Black scored first but it was Team White that skated to a 4-2 win with two unanswered goals in the third at the AUS All Star game at the Grant Harvey Centre here.

After a first period that saw no one beat the goaltender at either end of the ice. The game took off early in the second with Team Black opening the scoring at the 3:57 mark on a goal by Lucas Bloodoff from Jordan Mayer. Black scored again at the 13:17 mark of the middle frame as Mike Cazzola took a pass from Brett Thompson to Liam Heelis and dumped it home. That gave Team Black a short lived 2-0 lead.

But less than a minute later Chris Desousa got Team White on the board converting a play from Ryan Hillier to Corey Tanaka into the first goal for White and that left White down by one when the buzzer went on the first 40 minutes of play.Read more »

Hockey Axemen improve to 6-1 with 4-3 over Huskies

HALIFAX, N.S. – The CIS No. 6 ranked Axemen hockey team extended their winning streak to five with a 4-3 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax. The win gives Acadia a 2-0 season series lead with the remaining games against the Huskies in the second half of the season after Christmas.

A scoreless first period quickly changed in the remaining two periods when the Huskies scored first eight minutes into second frame. Parker Deighan netted the only goal of the second period for the Huskies.

Acadia’s Mike Cazzola tied the game at 12:30 in the second followed under a minute later by Scott Trask’s first goal of the regular season to give Acadia a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

Three minutes into the final frame, Huskie Steven Beyers tied the game at one with his fifth goal of the season. Just over a minute later, the Axemen regained the lead when Brett Thompson scored his third goal of the season, ending a six game scoring drought that began after the season opening game where Thompson scored two goals.Read more »

FREDERICTON, N.B. – The Team Canada coaching staff is pleased to announce the student-athletes selected as forwards for the Tim Hortons Team Canada men’s hockey all-star game.

Returning for the first time since 1999, this year’s event will be held Friday, Nov. 8 at the new Grant-Harvey Centre in Fredericton, N.B. on the St. Thomas Tommies’ home ice, with the puck set to drop at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the game will help fund Canada’s men’s hockey team’s trip to Trentino, Italy for the 2013 FISU Winter Universiade, December 11-21.

The all-star showcase will also serve as the final identification game before Team Canada is officially selected. Following Friday’s all-star game, the 22-man team selected to represent Canada in Trentino will stay in Fredericton for an orientation camp which will take place Saturday through Monday, Nov. 12. The team will practice together on the Grant Harvey Centre’s Olympic-sized rink.Read more »

Gaynor leads Axemen in win over Saint Mary’s with two goals

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Veteran forward and the Subway First Star of the Game, Joe Gaynor, scored both of the Axemen’s goals, which was enough to defeat the defending AUS champion Saint Mary’s Huskies 2-1. Evan Mosher stopped 26 shots and was named the third star in the victory.

The CIS No. 8 ranked Axemen have now won 4 straight games, improving to 5-1-0 on the season.

The Axemen opened the scoring in the first, with Joe Gaynor as the recipient of a beautiful end-to-end rush by second year forward Dylan Anderson, sliding a pass across crease for a wide-open cage. The entire period was dominated by the Axemen outshooting their opponents a lopsided 20-5.Read more »

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia captain Liam Heelis has had the hot stick of late, scoring eight goals in his last three games including a trio tonight against the Dalhousie Tigers.

A third year forward, Heelis did something rare in modern hockey, scoring three straight beginning in the second period, for a natural hat trick. His dominating play led the Axemen to a convincing 5-0 victory over the winless Dalhousie Tigers and was given the game’s first star on a unusual Wednesday night match up.

Rookie goaltender Brandon Glover recorded his first win of the season in fashion, stopping all 27 shots he faced including numerous acrobatic saves. He was awarded the third star for his brilliant performance.Read more »

Axemen hand UPEI first loss, with a 2-1 win

photo_2015046_resize_articleThe Acadia Axemen made it a perfect road trip, as they followed up a road win Friday night at St Thomas, with a 2-1 road win at UPEI.

The Axemen improved their record to 3-1 on the season, handing UPEI, also 3-1, their first loss of the season.

Acadia opened up the scoring midway through the first period, with the red hot Liam Heelis, scoring his 4th goal of the weekend, with Alex Beaton adding an assist on the goal.

UPEI tied things up early in the second on a goal by Dana Fraser; Jordan Mayer picked up the helper.

That score held through two periods, until 7:58 of the third when Joe Gaynor scored a shorthanded marker to cap the scoring.Read more »
