Axemen hand UPEI first loss, with a 2-1 win

photo_2015046_resize_articleThe Acadia Axemen made it a perfect road trip, as they followed up a road win Friday night at St Thomas, with a 2-1 road win at UPEI.

The Axemen improved their record to 3-1 on the season, handing UPEI, also 3-1, their first loss of the season.

Acadia opened up the scoring midway through the first period, with the red hot Liam Heelis, scoring his 4th goal of the weekend, with Alex Beaton adding an assist on the goal.

UPEI tied things up early in the second on a goal by Dana Fraser; Jordan Mayer picked up the helper.

That score held through two periods, until 7:58 of the third when Joe Gaynor scored a shorthanded marker to cap the scoring.

UPEI pressed hard throughout the third looking for the tie; Christopher Desousa had a marvelous chance in the dying seconds, ringing a shot from the high slot off the crossbar.

Both teams had a number of powerplay chances, but neither could capitalize with the man advantage, as UPEI was 0 for 7, and Acadia was 0 for 5.

The game was a battle of the goaltenders, as Mavric Parks of UPEI and Evan Mosher of Acadia were both outstanding in goal. Parks stopped 25 of 27 shots, while Mosher got the win stopping 27 of 28.

Acadia returns home for a pair of games this week, hosting Dalhousie in a Wednesday evening matchup at the Acadia Arena, and continue the homestand taking on Saint Mary’s on Friday night.
