Axemen hold onto 2-1 win over Panthers
Steeves stars in goal, Lepkowski nets winner
WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia didn’t have a lot of opportunitiesย in the game, butย theyย made theย few they had count.
Theย Axemenย scored twice on just 13 shots on goal, with Remyย Giftopoulosย and Alexanderย Lepkowskiย leadingย the wayย with a goal eachย in aย 2-1 victory over the UPEI Panthers Friday night.
Down two heading into the final period, the Panthers outplayed their opponent and trimmed it to a single goalย on RT Rice’s sixth goal of the season.ย Butย goaltender Robertย Steevesย was too much for the home team to overcome.
“I’m really happy for him,” saidย Axemenย head coach Darren Burnsย ofย Steeves.ย “He’s had a big year for us and our guys love playing in front of him.”
Steevesย recorded 25 saves on 26 shots, including 10 in the decisive final period, guiding Acadiaย (15-7-1)ย to their eighth win in their last 10 games.
Coming into theย game,ย Steevesย split playingย time with freshman Devin Williams. But after Friday’s performance, the third-yearย netminderย mightย see more actionย between the pipes. Inย 12 games,ย Steevesย owns a 9-3 record withย a 2.17ย goals againstย averageย and a .920 save percentage.
“He’s worked hard and he’s a great teammate,” Burns said. “He’s had a great season for us and we need him toย keep doingย that.”
The intensity was high, with both teams looking to get back in the win column. Shotsย on net wereย scarceย as theย defencesย played disciplined and didn’t give up many open looks.
That lasted until the midway point whenย Giftopoulosย opened the scoring. From the side of the net,ย heย corralled aย bouncing puck with his stick and buried it past a divingย Mattย Mahalakย for the early advantage.ย
Minutes later, Panthersย defencemanย Austin Levi fired a rocket from just inside the blue line atย Steeves, who showed off the leather withย aย quick snag, keeping the slim lead intact.
The Panthersย (8-11-4)ย were fortunate to be down by only one, as theirย penalty kill unit held Acadiaย scoreless on twoย separateย power plays.
Samย Aulieย nearly knottedย itย up in the final minute of the period, but missed the open cage wide right.
The Panthers came into the second period looking to even the score, withย 1:57ย remaining on a power play.ย But theย formidableย Acadia squad โ rankedย fifth in U Sports โย came out with a sense of urgency and held UPEI without a shot on net.
Two minutes later,ย Lepkowski,ย onย aย feed from Stephen Harper,ย sniped a shot from the left circle pastย Mahalak, extendingย theย leadย 2-0.
UPEI’sย power play unit did a better job on their second stint with the man advantage, butย Steevesย continued his stellar play, stopping anything that came near him.
Goaltending continued to be the story of the night, as a flailingย Mahalak, with hisย stickย flyingย in the air,ย made a remarkable saveย in the opening seconds of the third to keep his team afloat.
Steevesย matchedย Mahalakย withย aย niceย stickย saveย across his bodyย to denyย aย threatening Panther shot just minutes later.
But the persistentย Panthers finally pierced throughย Steeves’ย nearย perfect outing.ย Fromย an unlikelyย angleย onย the right side,ย Rice scraped iron to beatย Steeves, trimming the deficit to one.
UPEIย had a chance to even the score on a power play near the midway point, butย Steevesย quickly bounced backย and regained his dominant form,ย denying anย aggressive Panthersย attack.
“I was dialed in,” saidย Steeves,ย whoseย performanceย impressed as the pressure mounted. “Iย like it when I get more shots.ย Iย just get moreย comfortableย back there.”
The majority of the third sawย Acadiaย stuck in their ownย defensive zone, as the relentless Panthers continued to pressure theย Axemen.ย Butย Steeves’ย performance down the stretch was exactly what Acadiaย needed toย escapeย withย theย 2-1 win.
The Panthers have a quick turnaround and will hit the ice again on Jan. 21 when they take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies at MacLauchlan Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
