Latvian national team coach Ted Nolan signs with Buffalo, Tom Coolen takes over the reigns until Sochi

1351764124_20121101120204RIGA/BUFFALO – Ted Nolan, the head coach of the Latvian national team, will also coach the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and combine both jobs for the remainder of the season.

The Sabres, currently the NHL team with the fewest points, announced on Wednesday that Nolan will replace Ron Rolston. For the Canadian coach it’s a comeback after coaching the Sabres to a 73-72-19 record between 1995 and 1997.

The Sabres signed an agreement with the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF), where Nolan has been under contract since 2011, which enables him to coach both teams.

“Ted Nolan is still under contract with the federation until the end of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Nothing has changed. We have an agreement with Nolan and the Buffalo Sabres that he can combine both jobs,” said spokesman Maris Gorbunovs.Read more »

Acadia’s Cazzola scores Canada’s first goal in 6-2 win

Winter Universiade men’s hockey Canada edges defending champ Russia, to play for gold on Saturday

TRENTINO, Italy (CIS) – Tyler Carroll from the University of New Brunswick had a goal and an assist as the Canadian men’s hockey team advanced to the gold-medal final at the Winter Universiade thanks to a 2-1 semifinal victory over defending two-time champion Russia, Friday afternoon.

It was a remarkable win for the team comprised of Atlantic University Sport all-stars, who were facing a powerful opponent which entered the contest with an unblemished 4-0 record, having outscored its rivals by a 25-3 margin in the process. The Russian lineup includes 11 players with KHL experience, nine of them currently skating in the league.

Andrew Clark Called Up to AHL

Forward Andrew Clark has been called up to the AHL for the first time in his career by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Stockton, Calif. – The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Stockton Thunder’s AHL affiliate, have signed Thunder forward Andrew Clark to a Professional Try-Out contract (PTO) Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Rich Kromm announced Thursday. The move comes days after Clark, 25, was named the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for his performance registering 8 points in 2 games. Clark leads the Thunder in all three major scoring categories with 10 goals, 16 assists and 26 points. Clark also leads the team in multi-goal games with three as well as in shots on goal with 77.

“He definitely deserves a call-up and a chance to show what he can do,” said Kromm. “He’s played in every situation for us and has been a key guy for us. Obviously, he had a big weekend last weekend, so a well deserved opportunity for Andrew.”

Clark’s big weekend boosted him to seventh in the league for most points this season. The Brandon, Manitoba native also leads the league in points and assists by a rookie player. To top it off, Clark’s 5-point outing against the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday ties him for most points by a player in a single game this season with Alaska’s Peter Sivak.Read more »

Winter Universiade men’s hockey: Canada blanks Slovakia in quarters, to face Russia in semis

TRENTINO, Italy (CIS) – Tyler Carroll scored two goals while Chris Culligan and Éric Faille tallied three points apiece as the Canadian men’s hockey team qualified for the semifinals at the Winter Universiade thanks to a 6-0 quarter-final win over Slovakia, Wednesday night.

The result sets up yet another meeting at the biennial tournament between Canada and archrival Russia, Friday at 10:30 a.m. EST (4:30 p.m. Trentino) in the early Final Four matchup. The second semi will see the United States battle Kazakhstan at 2:30 p.m. EST. Both games are streamed live at www.fisu.tv.

In today’s other quarter-finals, Russia (4-0) beat the Czech Republic 5-1, the USA (3-1) shut out Italy 5-0 and Kazakhstan (4-0) dominated Latvia 6-1.

The Canadians and Russians – the two-time defending champions – have met at each of the last four FISU tourneys. Russia prevailed 4-2 in the 2011 semis, 4-2 in the 2009 gold-medal match and 6-0 in pool play in 2005, while the Canucks triumphed 3-1 in the 2007 final to capture their third Universiade title.Read more »

Pensacola pretty much has it all — the beach, reigning champs of the SPHL Presidents Cup and a bunch of babes on ice. As with many professional hockey teams, there is much more to these guys than just the good looks. Pensacola Forward Justin Alonzo played for the Boston Jr. Bruins before attending college and playing for Castleton State College. Goaltender Peter Di Salvo is a Canadian native that has spent most of his time in the OHL playing for the Sarnia Sting, Barrie Colts and Oshawa Generals. He played 32 games with Acadia University before joining the Ice Flyers this season. These are only two of the guys that Pensacola is proud to have playing for them.

(TRENTINO, Italy) – The Canadian men’s hockey team suffered its first setback at the Winter Universiade dropping a 4-2 decision to Kazakhstan in its third and final preliminary round game, Sunday evening.

Kazakhstan (3-0) and Canada (2-1) finish first and second in Pool C, respectively, and both advance to the quarter-finals of the biennial competition on Dec. 18. Their next opponents will be decided once pool play wraps up on Monday.

After opening the 12-team tournament with convincing wins over Japan, 12-1, and Ukraine, 11-0, the Canucks were brought back to earth by a rival they had defeated 3-1 in the bronze-medal match two years ago in Turkey.

Special teams played a key role in today’s contest as Kazakhstan scored twice on eight power play opportunities and added a short-handed marker, while the team of Atlantic University Sport all-stars went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.Read more »

Canada blanks Ukraine 11-0, improves to 2-0

(TRENTINO, Italy) – Pierre Vandall from Dalhousie University had a goal and three assists and Nick MacNeil from UNB scored his fifth and sixth of the tournament as the Canadian men’s hockey team improved to 2-0 at the Winter Universiade thanks to an 11-0 win over Ukraine, Friday night.

UNB’s MacNeil scores four, Canada opens with 12-1 domination of Japan

20131209_Hockey_CANJAP_FedMod_014(TRENTINO, Italy) – Nick MacNeil scored four goals and Mike Cazzola tallied six points as the Canadian men’s hockey team dominated Japan 12-1 in its tournament opener at the 26th Winter Universiade, on Tuesday night.

The red and white squad, comprised entirely of all-stars from the Atlantic University Sport conference, now enjoys a two-day break before facing Ukraine on Friday in its second of three Pool A contests. The Canucks will then wrap up the preliminary round on Sunday against Kazakhstan, a nation they beat 3-1 two years ago in the bronze-medal match of the biennial competition.

The Canadians missed a glorious opportunity to open the scoring only 78 seconds into the game when Chris Culligan was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped. The team captain couldn’t capitalize but it would be one of the rare joyous moments on the evening for the overmatched Japanese side.Read more »

OTTAWA (CIS) – Chris Culligan, a forward from the reigning CIS champion University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, has been named captain of the Canadian men’s hockey team for the 26th Winter Universiade, a few hours before the start of the biennial tournament in Trentino, Italy.

Canada heads into the competition as reigning bronze medallist thanks to a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan in the third-place match of the 2011 tourney in Erzurum, Turkey. The Canucks had previously dropped a 4-2 decision to defending two-time champion Russia in the semifinals.Read more »
