Acadia’s men’s hockey team will open the varsity season at home Friday evening against St. Thomas.

The Axemen roster is a combination of the familiar and the unfamiliar. Gone are stalwarts Jonathan Laberge, Andrew Clark, Spencer Jezegou, Jacob Dietrich, Michael Ward and goalie Peter Di Salvo – the latter two moving on to pursue professional opportunities.Read more »

Hockey’s Liam Heelis attends NHL Florida Panthers Camp

WOLFVILLE, NS – Third year Acadia Axemen hockey forward Liam Heelis will pursue every hockey players dream of making the big leagues this week as he attends the NHL’s Florida Panthers Prospects Camp. Heelis, a native of Georgetown, Ont., will take part in the annual Panthers’ camp, which will include 28 players (three goalies, nine defensemen, 16 forwards).

Beginning with medical and physical testing on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the BB&T Center, the first on-ice practice session will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. at the JetBlue Training Facility at the Saveology.com Iceplex.

Heelis is one of 16 forwards and the only current CIS player on the team roster. The Panthers open a four-team prospects tournament (Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins & Nashville Predators) with a game against Nashville’s prospects on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. All four teams will compete in a round robin tournament that concludes on Sunday, Sept. 8. Schemitsch, Buonomo, Trask, Ferry and Makin headline additions

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia University and Axemen hockey head coach Darren Burns are pleased to announce this year’s committed photo_2015046_resize_articlerecruits for the 2013-14 season. The recruiting class of 2013 includes two defencemen and three forwards.

This year’s recruits will add size to the 2012-13 AUS third place finishing Axemen including 6’2″ defenceman Geoffrey Schemitsch of Thornhill, Ont. A former Oshawa General (OHL), Geoff was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Highly skilled and an excellent puck moving defenceman, Burns is happy on Schemitsch’s choice of Acadia. “Geoff sees the ice extremely well and has the ability to log a lot of minutes. His smooth skating and great passing skills will help our powerplay this season”.

The 16th Annual Hockey Celebrity Dinner highlighted by Wendel Clark appearance

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – For the 16th consecutive year, the Axemen Hockey Celebrity Dinner, presented by local barristers BoyneClarke, drew the attention of the Annapolis Valley sport community with this year’s headliner NHL great and former Toronto Maple Leafs’ captain Wendel Clark.

With just over 500 in attendance, Clark grabbed the attention of an appreciative crowd from his stories of past glory with the Toronto Maple Leafs to his opinion on today’s game and the recent banning of checking in minor hockey leagues across Canada. In a Question and Answer session with TSN Correspondent and emcee Paul Hollingsworth, Clark spoke about the tough guys of the past NHL and how much the game has changed over the last decade with more physical play.Read more »

StFX’s Beukeboom and Acadia’s Clark to represent AUS at BLG Awards

andrew_clark_CIS_award2012CALGARY (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport and national law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) announced Wednesday the eight finalists for the 20th Annual BLG Awards.

The BLG Awards were established in 1993 to recognize the top female and male athletes from universities affiliated with CIS.
On Monday, April 30, the eight national nominees will be honoured, with one female and one male winner receiving a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship in front of more than 1,000 guests at the EPCOR Centre’s Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary.

Rev. Terry Burns and his brother Darren (head coach of the Acadia Axemen) weigh in on Canada being shut out of the medals at the world juniors over the Christmas break. On Thursday morning last week, I bounded from my bed, ran to the TV room like a child waking up on Christmas day and expected to hear of a decisive Team Canada win over the U.S. as I tuned in to TSN. I couldn’t believe my eyes, there it was: U.S. 5, Canada 1. And then another heartbreak, a loss to Russia! I have been following just about every major media network in Canada since then and have just about hurled as I have read the online comments from sports fans chirping in on the “whys” for the loss.Read more »

Defenceman Chris Owens of St. John’s is regarded as one of the conference’s best players, goaltender Evan Mosher of Conception Bay South has struggled but still has a fan in Burns, and freshman Travis Randell has exceeded expectations.

Owens, in his third year with the Wolfville, Nova Scotia program, was off to an MVP-type season until Nov. 30th when he was sidelined indefinitely with a concussion by a dirty hit that resulted in a 12-game suspension for the University of Prince Edward Island perpetrator. Apparently, UPEI’s Mason Wilgosh skated in from the blueline to check Owens who had just dished off a pass behind his team’s net and was looking the other way. The suspension is very significant considering AUHC teams only play a 28-game schedule.Read more »

Colin Archer has two sisters and it’s important to him that sexism and violence toward women become a thing of the past.

photo_2226036_resizeArcher, a member of the Acadia Axemen hockey team, was among a group of about two dozen protesters who converged on the streets of downtown Wolfville Nov. 25 to take part in a march linking the Real Men Wear Heels and the Take Back the Night movements. The message was clear: protesting sexism and violence toward women. Those taking part carried colourful signs and chanted slogans such as “no means no” and “stop the silence, stop the violence.”

“It has to be a thing of the past,” Archer said. “We have to grow to progress.”

He said there were a few members of the hockey team there to take part. Archer said it was important to him to participate because “if you can’t take the initiative, you can’t expect others to.”Read more »
