CIS No. 4 Acadia hands No. 3 UNB lopsided 5-1 loss

story courtesy of hockey.acadiau.ca 01/12/2013 12:39 am

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A highly anticipated match up was set as the CIS No. 3 ranked UNB Varsity Reds visited the CIS No. 4 Acadia Axemen in Wolfville.

With over 1700 in attendance for this Saturday night match up at the Acadia Arena, the game was one of the more physical games of the year, including numerous penalties on both sides, totaling a combined 72 minutes.

Starting right off the opening draw the ice seemed to be tilted in Acadia’s favour. Third year forward Joel Ridgeway opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game and was given the game’s Subway third star. Ridgeway was in the right spot at the right time, when all he had to do was poke the puck into the net, as the UNB goaltender Charles Lavigne lost track of the puck. Acadia would hold onto the 1-0 lead into the locker room.Read more »

A late third period delay-of-game penalty by Acadia cost them the victory. Eric Faille tied the game with 48 seconds remaining in regulation time on the powerplay and scored the shootout winner, earning him the Subway First Star of the Game.

Brandon Glover stopped 39 of 42 shots and received the games third star for his performance.

Acadia’s Dylan Anderson opened the scoring early in the first on a remarkable deke, out-skating the Moncton defenseman, cutting across the crease and netting his third of the season.

Later in the period, Wolfville, N.S. native KC Brown was the recipient of a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal, picking up his first of the year and putting the Axemen up by two. Only a minute and 39 seconds later, Moncton’s Pier-Antoine Dion went top shelf over a sprawling Brandon Glover to bring the Aigles Bleus back to within one.Read more »

Regina Pats head coach Malcolm Cameron has seen it all

On many a day, Malcolm Cameron has been a motor coach.

The Regina Pats’ head coach has grown accustomed to life on the buses, and not strictly because he is in his third season with the WHL team.

Most of his time on the iron lung has been spent as a player or coach in the minors – especially in the East Coast Hockey League.

Given that seasoning, the 44-year-old Cameron felt right at home during the Pats’ recent tour of the WHL’s U.S. Division. After all these years, and all these destinations, he is eminently qualified to discuss bus trips through the United States.

“When I coached in Texas and Florida, particularly, our closest road game was nine hours away, so we spent a lot of time on the road,” Cameron reflected before the Pats practised on Wednesday. “One time in Florida, I think we were gone 21 days on the road. It’s tough on families, for sure, but we came out of it pretty good.” Some things never change.Read more »

As anyone who has ever played on one knows well, a sports team is made up of many parts, including the ones that aren’t always as noticeable.

For more than 30 years, Chris “Rocky” Randall of Kentville has been an important part of a number of local sports teams, filling a valuable role, usually as trainer or equipment manager. Many of the teams Randall has been a part of have enjoyed their share of regional and even national success.

Randall has two national championship rings earned as trainer and equipment manager of the Acadia hockey Axemen, in 1993 and 1996, and, he says, “probably should have won at least two more” over the years.

He also served as batboy for the national senior baseball champion 1985 Kentville Wildcats, who were inducted Nov. 2 into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in the team category. It was Randall‘s second Sports Hall of Fame induction. He was already a member of the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame, along with the rest of the 1993 hockey Axemen. Someday soon, the 1996 Axemen championship team may be inducted as well.Read more »

FISU_AUS_MH_logoFREDERICTON, NB, November 8, 2013 – Team Black scored first but it was Team White that skated to a 4-2 win with two unanswered goals in the third at the AUS All Star game at the Grant Harvey Centre here.

After a first period that saw no one beat the goaltender at either end of the ice. The game took off early in the second with Team Black opening the scoring at the 3:57 mark on a goal by Lucas Bloodoff from Jordan Mayer. Black scored again at the 13:17 mark of the middle frame as Mike Cazzola took a pass from Brett Thompson to Liam Heelis and dumped it home. That gave Team Black a short lived 2-0 lead.

But less than a minute later Chris Desousa got Team White on the board converting a play from Ryan Hillier to Corey Tanaka into the first goal for White and that left White down by one when the buzzer went on the first 40 minutes of play.Read more »
