Axemen strong down the stretch, defeat Panthers 7-5
The Acadiaย Axemenย surrendered their lead three times, but held the Panthers down long enough to escape the Island with a 7-5 win Saturday night.ย
Subway Player of the Game Samuelย Fiorettiย scored the game’s first and last goals, while teammate Kyle Farrell scored a pair as well to lead theย Axemenย to victory. Bostonย Leierย finished with four points on a goal and three assists, with Owen MacDonald and Rodneyย Southamย findingย the back of the net forย theย other two.ย
“We played hard butย there are things weย need to sharpen up,”ย Fiorettiย said. “Weย justย stuck to it and we didn’t quit when they started to get momentum.”ย
Theย Axemenย (5-2-1)ย wastedย little time getting on the scoreboard, asย Fiorettiย was givenย a gift on the doorstepย and made itย count for the 1-0 edgeย justย three minutes intoย the game.ย
The Panthersย (2-5-1)ย bounced backย after surrendering theย quickย goal andย pressuredย Acadia’sย defence.ย With just over a minute remainingย in the opening period,ย Kameronย Kiellyย rounded the net andย leftย theย puckย behindย for Gabeย Guertler, who fired itย off rookie goaltender Dawsonย Cartyย and in for the equalizer.ย
Theย dreadedย penalty kill once again haunted UPEIย at 6:58 in the second, as a series of short,ย quick passes led toย Farrell‘s firstย goal, pulling Acadia ahead 2-1. 24 secondsย later,ย Southamย caught UPEI napping andย went in alone to extend theย lead 3-1.ย
While on a power play at 14:07,ย Darcy Ashley trimmed it to a one-goal gameย with a missile from the topย left circle. However,ย Acadiaย responded quicklyย on Farrell’s secondย markerย of the contest.ย ย
Instead of hanging their heads, the Panthers scored their third consecutive goal with the man-advantage, this time byย Kielly.ย Fellow rookieย Filipย Rydstromย then tied the game at four apiece just 14 seconds later.ย Before the period ended,ย Leierย reclaimed the lead for theย Axemenย while on a power play.ย
That lasted all but three minutes as the back and forth affair continuedย earlyย in the third period, where Ryan MacKinnon’s shot from just inside the blue line sailed past Carty to tie it at 5-5.ย
“Weย got goals here and there, but then we let up a bit and tookย our foot off the gas,”ย Fiorettiย said, “I think a lot of it is discipline too. Weย took someย penalties, whichย allowed them back in the game. It’s definitely something we’re going to focus on moving forward.”ย
Following MacKinnon’s goal, theย Axemenย finally took control of the game on goals byย MacDonald at 5:48 andย Fioretti‘sย second of the nightย at 10:55.ย
The Panthers look to snap their five-game losing streak on Nov. 1 when they travel to Moncton, N.B. to take on theย Universitรฉย de Monctonย Aiglesย Bleus. Puck drops at 7 p.m.ย
