Axemen comeback stifled with late game winner by X-Men

Acadia 3rd period rally falls short

Antigonish, NS –ย Theย U SPORTS No. 4 rankedย StFXย XMen edgedย the No. 6 rankedย Acadia Axemenย by a 5-4 scoreย Wednesday eveningย at theย Charles V. Keating Centre.ย For the second time in a week, the Axemen have been on the short end of the stick with both games resulting in a 5-4 for the X-Men. The first loss came at the hands of an overtime shootout and this time, with 1:12 remaining in regulation time.

Matt Needham (Penticton, BC) scored the game winning goal with only 1:12 left in the third period as the home team staved off an Acadia comeback and held on for the win.ย 

The XMen opened the gameย by scoring three goals in quick succession.ย Thirty-six seconds into the periodย Samย Studnickaย (Windsor,ย ON), assisted by Adam Stevens (Bedford, NS), found the back ofย the net afterย intercepting anย Axemenย pass.ย ย 

Just 29 seconds laterย Holdenย Cook (Oshawa,ย ON)ย wentย top shelf onย Axemen goaltender Dawson Carty (Burlington, ON).ย Craig Duininck (St. Cloud, MN) and Needham had the helpers on the second goal.ย 

Mark Tremaine (Dartmouth, NS) was the thirdย X-Men to find theย back of theย net in the first frame, scoring a wraparound goalย atย 3:29.ย Stevens andย Studnickaย assisted as theย X-Men jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage.ย 

The three quick goalsย from the blue and whiteย ended the night for Axemenย freshmanย goaltenderย Carty as he wasย pulled in favour ofย veteranย Robertย Steevesย (St. Joseph-de-Kent, NB).ย Carty had only faced four StFX shots.ย 

The Axemenย did getย the board by the end of the first periodย whenย defensemanย Alexanderย Lepkowskiย (Buffalo, NY), assisted byย Stephen Harper (Burlington, ON),ย beatย Chaseย Marchandย (Halifax, NS)ย up high.ย 

The opening 20 minutes ended with the 3-1 advantage for the X-Men.ย ย 

With penalties abound in the second period, a 4-on-3ย power playย at 10:33ย ledย toย StFX’sย fourth goal of the game by defensemanย Jagger Dirk (Penticton, BC).ย Cook and Kristoff Kontos (Penetanguishene, ON)ย picked up the helpers on the play as the X-Men re-established their three-goal lead.ย 

The Axemen responded with their ownย power playย goalย late in the periodย atย 18:49 scored by Chance Braid (Wainwright, AB)ย and assisted by Remyย Giftopoulosย (Ancaster, ON) andย Michaelย Zippย (Edmonton, AB).ย ย 

The Axemen quicklyย erased their two-goal deficit as veteran forwardย Bostonย Leierย (Saskatoon, SK) scoredย an unassisted goal atย 4:59ย of the third periodย following a StFX turnoverย in their own end.ย Leier, along with Owen MacDonald (Elora, ON),ย assistedย Rodneyย Southamย (Saskatoon, SK)ย who netted a hard-fought powerย play goal at 10:39, tyingย the gameย at 4-4.ย ย 

The X-Men showed great character in coming back for the win as Subway Player of the Gameย Needham scoredย the game winnerย offย aย one-timerย fromย Cook and Santinoย Centorameย (Mississauga, ON).ย 

Shots favoured Acadia by a slimย margin,ย 34-32.ย ย 

Marchand picked up his third win of the season in as many games for the X-Menย with 30 saves in the game, including several key saves in the third period.ย Steevesย turned aside 26 in the Axemen net.ย ย 

X-Menย forwardย Samย Studnickaย was named the game’sย second star, and Axemenย forwardย Leierย was third star.ย 

Next up on the AUS schedule sees the XMenย on the roadย to Halifax to faceย Saint Mary’s on Friday night. The Axemenย willย host theย Dalhousie Tigers, also on Friday. Both games start at 7pm.
