Acadia receives commitment from Matteo Disipio

Former Mercyhurst University forward brings NCAA experience to the Axemen

The Acadia Axemen are proud to welcome forward Matteo Disipio to the hockey program.

A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Disipio joins the Axemen after spending the past two seasons at NCAA Division I Mercyhurst University. Before making the jump to college hockey, the skilled forward enjoyed a breakout campaign in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), establishing himself as one of the league’s top offensive players.

During the 2023-24 season with the Amarillo Wranglers, Disipio recorded 25 goals and 35 assists for 60 points in 58 regular season games, finishing among the team’s leading scorers. His outstanding season earned him selection to the 2024 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament, recognizing him as one of the league’s premier players. He continued his strong play in the postseason, adding 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points in 8 playoff games while helping Amarillo advance in the Robertson Cup Playoffs.

His impressive NAHL campaign led to an opportunity at the NCAA Division I level with Mercyhurst University. Over the past two seasons, Disipio appeared in 50 career games, recording 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points while competing against some of the top collegiate programs in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The experience allowed him to further develop his two-way game while gaining valuable experience in a demanding NCAA environment.

Axemen Head Coach Darren Burns is excited with the addition of Disipio, saying “Matteo is a very cerebral offensive player. He sees the ice well and has a knack for creating offence. His sound hockey intelligence will be a good addition to our team. Coming in as a transfer he will help bring veteran leadership to our lineup immediately.”

Disipio’s combination of offensive skill, pace, and high-level experience makes him an exciting addition to the Axemen forward group. His proven ability to produce at the junior level, combined with two seasons of NCAA Division I hockey, gives Acadia another experienced player capable of making an immediate impact.

Asked why he chose Acadia as his U Sports destination, Matteo said, “because of the coaching staff and their consistent mindset of winning championships was a big factor. Those goals paired with a strong academic reputation made Acadia a program I wanted to be a part of.”

Now preparing for the next chapter of his hockey career in Wolfville, Disipio is eager to contribute to a program with championship aspirations, saying “Axemen fans will see a player that wants to win. A high IQ, great playmaking, and scoring ability would be a fitting description for my game. I lead by example with my play and work hard to make the players around me better as well.”

The Acadia Axemen are excited to welcome Matteo to Wolfville and look forward to seeing him in an Axemen uniform this fall.
