Axemen end first half of the season with a 3-2 loss to Dalhousie

Flaman & Hoyt with the Acadia goals

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Dalhousie Tigers beat the Acadia Axemen 3-2 in Saturday night men’s hockey action at the Halifax Forum.

Acadia began the game on the attack, peppering Dalhousie goaltender Alexander MacDonald (Truro, NS) with shots in the hopes that something would get by him. MacDonald turned them all away and was rewarded late in the period when Matt Green (Hammonds Plains, NS) and Kyle Yewchuk (Calgary, AB) found the back of the net to give the Tigers the lead.

Acadia’s aggression paid off early in the second period when Jack Flaman (Vbank, SK) redirected a puck past MacDonald to close the gap on the powerplay. Dalhousie’s Ethan O’Rourke (Prince George, BC) responded later in the period to keep the Axemen comeback at bay.

The Axemen wouldn’t quit though and continued to fire away on MacDonald. For the game, they outshot the Tigers 34-20, and midway through the third period they managed to get their second goal from Peyton Hoyt (Fredericton, NB) to shrink Dalhousie’s lead once more.

Their effort came too late though, as Dalhousie walked away with their second win of the season, breaking a 13 game losing streak. They now sit at 2-15-0-1 on the season while Acadia drops to 5-10-1-2 entering the winter break.

Kyle Yewchuk, earned Subway player of the game honours for Dalhousie.

Dal and Acadia will face off against each other in their next match-up on January 6 at the Halifax Forum, but for now, both teams will take the winter break to rest up and refocus for the home stretch.
