Huskies squeeze out OT win over Axemen

Houck & Harper Tally for Acadia

HALIFAX, NS –Β The Saint Mary’s Huskies (8-3-1) and the AcadiaΒ AxemenΒ (4-7-1) faced off for the second time in less than a weekΒ at the Halifax ForumΒ in AUS Men’s hockey action. Trailing for most of the game, the Huskies were able to tie things upΒ and took the win in overtime.

The teams traded power play opportunities early in the game, but nobody was able to convert.Β

Back at even strength, theΒ AxemenΒ opened the scoring at 7:55 of the first period. Rodney Southam (Saskatoon, SK) jumped on a turnover just outside the Saint Mary’s blue line and passed across to Jackson Houck (Delta, BC) who sniped a shot low corner. LiamΒ MaaskantΒ (Clinton, ON) also assistedΒ

The Huskies tied it up less than two minutes later with a power play goal, a one timer from JakeΒ CoughlerΒ (St.Β Catharines, ON) that rang off the inside post and in. It was assisted by HunterΒ GarlentΒ (Thorold, ON) and DawsonΒ TheedeΒ (Brooklin, ON).Β

The score was 1-1 after twenty minutes of play.Β

It was a penalty filled second period, with penalties going both ways, but the only goal of the period came during 5 on 5 play and it was in Acadia’sΒ favour.Β

At 9:35, Kyle Farrell (Howie Corner, NS) entered the zone and sent a pass down low to Stephen Harper (Burlington, ON) whose backhand shot got past Huskies goalie Eric Brassard (St. Hubert, QC) for the go-ahead goal.Β

TheΒ AxemenΒ went into the break with a 2-1 lead.Β

The third period started quietly, but the Huskies got a goal halfway through to tie things up. On the power play,Β TheedeΒ tipped in a shot from the point fromΒ Garlent, making the score 2-2.Β

The teams traded chances, with Harper being denied on a two on one for theΒ AxemenΒ and Bronson Beaton (Springhill, NS) having a decent look on a three on two.Β

Nobody scored in the remaining regulation time, sending the game to overtime.Β

InΒ 3-on-3Β overtime, it was AlexΒ Peters (Blyth, ON) who won the game for the Huskies. Weaving the length of the ice, he sent a wrist shot over the shoulder ofΒ AxemenΒ goalie LoganΒ FlodellΒ (Regina, SK).Β

Huskie DawsonΒ TheedeΒ was named the Subway Player of the Game. Moncton hosts the Axemen on Friday and Huskies on Saturday.Β
