Axemen handed 7-0 loss undefeated UNB

Reds score four powerplay goals

FREDERICTON, NB –Β Tyler BolandΒ (St. John’s, NL)Β hadΒ twoΒ goalsΒ andΒ twoΒ assistsΒ asΒ the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UNBΒ RedsΒ defeatedΒ the Acadia AxemenΒ 7-0Β on Friday night.

TheΒ RedsΒ improve to 7-0Β with the win,Β while the AxemenΒ drop toΒ 2-5.Β 

Kris Bennett (Brampton, ON) also had a strong showing withΒ two goals and an assist.Β 

The Reds had all the momentum early,Β putting six shots on net before the Axemen could muster one.Β 

The Reds pace caused the Axemen to commit all sorts of turnovers, keeping most of the play in the Acadia end.Β 

With the Reds on the powerplay, MarkΒ RassellΒ (Calgary, AB)Β took a shot from the slot that bounced right to aΒ wide-openΒ Matthew BoucherΒ (Los Angeles, CA)Β who putΒ itΒ in a gaping net to put UNB up 1-0.Β 

The RedsΒ powerplay would pay off againΒ with BennettΒ feeding a textbook pass in front to Boland,Β who put away the Reds secondΒ goalΒ to make it 2-0.Β 

The Reds would keep the pressure on in the secondΒ period,Β and just 5:41 in,Β Cam Brace (Etobicoke, ON) put the puck five-hole on Axemen goaltender LoganΒ FlodellΒ (Regina, SK) to extend UNB’s lead to 3-0.Β 

The Axemen would find themselves in penalty trouble again late in the period giving up aΒ two-manΒ advantage to the Reds. UNB would again dominate the front of the Acadia net,Β andΒ Chris ClappertonΒ (CapΒ D’Espoir, QC)Β foundΒ Bennett for the Reds third powerplay goal to make it 4-0.Β 

Boland cleaned up a big rebound off a shot by RandyΒ GazzolaΒ (Thorold, ON) early in the thirdΒ periodΒ for his second of the game, making it 5-0Β Reds.Β 

Bennett added another power-play goal, with just under 10 minutes to play, to make it 6-0.Β 

The Reds went 4-7 on the powerplay,Β while the Axemen went 0-6.Β 

The Reds would completeΒ the onslaught with a goal by MattΒ BoudensΒ (Pembroke, ON)Β to make it 7-0.Β 

Shots were 48-13Β for UNB.Β 

Boland was named Subway Play of the Game for the Reds.Β 

Rylan ParenteauΒ (Saskatoon, SK)Β had a 13-save shutoutΒ forΒ the UNB,Β whileΒ FlodellΒ stoppedΒ 41 shotsΒ in theΒ AcadiaΒ net.Β 

The Reds play againΒ Saturday,Β at the Aitken Centre, hostingΒ the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Game time is 7:00pmΒ 

The Axeman head to CharlottetownΒ for matchup with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.
