Antigonish, NS –Β TheΒ U SPORTSΒ No, 4Β rankedΒ StFX X-Men toppedΒ the No. 7 rankedΒ visitingΒ Acadia Axemen 2-1 inΒ theirΒ last home game of the fall term.Β The victory marked the fifth consecutive win for the X-Men in a rough-and-tumble gameΒ Friday evening at the Charles V. Keating Centre in front of a crowd of 900.Β 

Matt Needham (Pentincton, BC) potted the game winner in the third period for X while Subway player of the game Chase Marchand (Halifax, NS) posted 27 saves in goal as he earned his league-leading 10thΒ win of the season between the pipes.Β 

TheΒ firstΒ goal of the gameΒ cameΒ 5:32 seconds into the opening period.Β Axemen forward BostonΒ LeierΒ (Saskatoon, SK) tookΒ possession of the puck from X-Men defensemanΒ Cole MacDonald (Wetaskiwin, AB) while on the penalty kill. HeΒ then found Chance Braid (Wainwright, BC) who fired a snapshotΒ as the Axemen’s first shot on goal beat Marchand for the short-handed marker.Β Β 

The X-MenΒ respondedΒ with a tally of their own midway through the period andΒ 17 secondsΒ intoΒ a power play opportunity.Β Following several quality scoring opportunities in the Axemen zone, the X-Men solved goaltender RobertΒ SteevesΒ (St. Joseph-de-Kent, NB)Β as forward Michael Clarke (London, ON) scored his 10th goal of the season.Β From the blue line Santino Centorame (Mississauga, ON) passed off toΒ Kristoff KontosΒ (Penetanguishene, ON) who foundΒ ClarkeΒ in the slot. Clarke snapped the puck over the glove ofΒ SteevesΒ to tie the game at one.Β Β 

Shots inΒ the firstΒ period favoured StFXΒ atΒ 16-9.Β 

The second period sawΒ several penalties handed out.Β Several scoring opportunities were exchanged between the teamsΒ during theΒ middle frame, which included anΒ extendedΒ two-man advantage for Acadia, but both came up empty.Β AcadiaΒ held aΒ 12-10Β shot advantage in the scoreless period.Β 

Needham’s game-winning goal came at theΒ 12:51Β mark ofΒ the third frame.Β While in the Axemen zone, BrysonΒ CianfroneΒ (Stoney Creek, ON) dished the puckΒ to NathanΒ PancelΒ (Ottawa, ON) who out-manoeuvredΒ sprawling Acadia defenderΒ MatthewΒ PufahlΒ (Saskatoon, SK)Β to find NeedhamΒ in front of the net.Β The second year forward wentΒ top shelf onΒ SteevesΒ for the winner.Β Β Β
