Five Alive: Axemen Win Five Straight

Axemen down St. FX 2-1

game story from Justin Halbersma of openingfaceoff.net

EvanMosherAdversity gives birth to character.Β  The Acadia Axemen certainly faced some adversity when they traveled to Antigonish Saturday evening to take on the St.FX X-Men in AUS hockey action…and in a true test of their character, they gritted out a tough 2-1 victory.Β  The win marked their fifth straight win.

It wasn’t the prettiest of games for either team, as it was a tightly contested battle from the beginning.Β  Both goalies brought their “A” games…Evan Mosher for Acadia staring down Drew Owsley, the X-Men goaltender.Β  In the end, it was Mosher who walked away with the victory, stopping 22 of 23 shots in the process.Β  Owsley matched him save for save, making 18 stops.Β  In the end, the Axemen squeaked two past him and that was all Mosher needed, making the lead stand up for his Axemen.

Michael Clarke and Travis Randell scored for the Axemen, while Jarrad Struthers replied for the X-Men.Β  The X-Men got their goal on the power play.

Specialty teams were almost a non-factor for both teams, with Acadia going 0/4 on the power play, and St. FX scoring on three opportunities.Β  St. FX showed off a tenacious penalty kill, keeping Acadia’s high octane offense off the board.

This game was a testament to Acadia’s character, facing some adversity in a very determined X-Men squad.Β  In the end, they held firm and refused to break…keeping their winning streak intact in the process.

The Axemen begin a two game trip this coming weekend, facing UNB on January 17 at 7:00pm.Β  They then visit Moncton on Saturday before returning home to face St. FX on January 25th in a rematch of tonight’s action.Β  Game time is 7:00pm.
