Acadia falls 4-0 to UPEI

WOLFVILLE – The UPEI Panthers (4-8-0-0) passed the Acadia Axemen (3-7-0-1) to move into fifth place with a 4-0 win on Friday night in Wolfville in front of 1,154 fans.Β Β 

Acadia outshot the Panthers 28-25 in the game, but it was UPEI that was successful offensively.Β Β 

Kaleb Pearson (St. Marys, ON) opened the scoring 13:20 into the first period, with the next goal not coming until 6:49 of the second from Yanic Crete (L’Original, ON).Β Β 

Pearson scored his second of the night 13:11 into the second on the power play, which the Panthers were 1-for-3 on the night.Β Β 

The final goal came from Noah Sedore (Sharon, ON), an empty-net goal with 2:10 to go in the game.Β Β 

Jonah Capriotti (Charlottetown, PE) picked up a 28-save victory between the pipes for UPEI, his first shutout of the season.Β Β 

Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) took the loss for Acadia, making 21 saves.Β Β 

The Axemen now travel to Halifax on Saturday to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies, while UPEI is off until next Saturday when they travel to Antigonish to face the X-Men.Β Β 

Burns with 4 points in Acadia win

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axemen (3-6-1) ended their losing streak on Saturday night, picking up a convincing 6-3 win over the Dalhousie Tigers (3-7-0), despite trailing multiple times throughout the night.

Alec Belanger (Quebec, QC) opened the scoring for the Tigers early, but was answered at the end of the first by Acadia’sΒ Liam KidneyΒ (Enfield, NS) scoring on the power play to end the first period tied 1-1.

In the second period Dal again took the lead, butΒ Brady BurnsΒ (Port Williams, NS) answered with an unassisted goal off a turnover at the Tigers blue-line.

Zak Smith (Austin, MB) scored the first of five goals in the final nine minutes of the third period to give Dalhousie a 3-2 lead before Acadia scored four unanswered goals to end the third. Smith’s goal was on the power play, which the Tigers finished the night 1-for-4.

Bailey PeachΒ (Falmouth, NS) evened the game up with Acadia’s second power play goal of the night. The Axemen finished 2-for-5.

Burns scored his second of the night and eventual game-winning goal at 15:54 of the period, with Kidney adding his second at 18:08.

A final empty-net goal was added byΒ Hudson WilsonΒ (Toronto, ON) with 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

Nicholas Chenard (Tecumseh, ON) made 25 saves in the loss for the Tigers, whileΒ Thomas CoutureΒ was credited with the win for Acadia having made 11 saves in 27 minutes of action.Β Brayden PetersΒ started the game but had to leave after making 11 stops with an injury.

Acadia is back in action at home on Friday night when the welcome UPEI (3-7-0), while the Tigers host the first place UNB Reds (10-0-0) in Halifax.

WOLFVILLE – The STFX X-Men continued their winning ways as they topped the Acadia Axemen 4-1 on Friday night in Wolfville.Β Β 

It was the fourth win in a row for the STFX, while Acadia lost their fifth straight.Β Β 

In the first period, STFX wasted no time in asserting their authority, with Declan Smith (Antigonish, NS) netting a power-play goal at 03:01, assisted by Josh Nelson (Lockport, IL). They extended their lead when Liam Hawel (Arnprior, ON) struck with a shorthanded goal at 11:32, also thanks to Smith’s assist.Β Β 

The second period saw STFX’s Hawel notch another power-play goal at 13:33, this time assisted by Matthew Struthers (Milton, ON).Β Β 

Acadia managed to get on the scoreboard when Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) found the back of the net at 17:38, with Zack Jones (North Falmouth, MA) providing the assist.Β Β 

In the third period, the X-Men continued their dominance with Nelson scoring a power-play goal at 12:25, assisted by Logan Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) and Smith. STFX exhibited efficiency on the power play, going 3-for-9, while Acadia struggled to convert on their power plays, going 0-for-8.Β 

Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) made 16 saves in the loss, while Joseph Raaymakers (Chatham, ON) made 32 saves in the victory.Β Β 

Saturday night Acadia welcomes the Dalhousie Tigers, an important game early in the season in the AUS standings, while STFX is home against the Saint Mary’s Huskies – who picked up a 5-0 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday. Puck drop is 7 p.m. for both games.Β Β 

Jones with the lone Axemen goal

The UniversitΓ© de Moncton Aigles Bleus (6-2-0-0) picked up a 4-1 win over the Acadia Axemen (2-5-0-1) on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey game in front of more than 640 spectators at the J.-Louis-LΓ©vesque Arena.Β 

It was their sixth straight win of the season, having lost their first two games of the campaign. Jeremy Lapointe at 15:29 in the first period, Edouard St-Laurent on the power play at 16:20 in the second and Alexandre Couture at 4:35 and NathaΓ«l Roy, the latter into an empty net late in the game at 19:45 in the third, found the back of the net for the winners.Β Zack JonesΒ was the only one to get the puck past goaltender Olivier Adam on 25 (5-12-8) shots.Β Brayden PetersΒ made 29 (10-12-7) shots in the loss. Jacob Dion added two assists. Moncton was 1-for-1 on the power play and Acadia was 0-for-4.Β 

Players from both teams battled for possession of the puck. The game was fast from one end of the ice to the other and the goalies made several key saves. The three stars of the game were Edouard St-Laurent, Jacob Dion and Alexandre Couture.Β 

The Aigles Bleus will host the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the J.-Louis-LΓ©vesque Arena and visit the UNB Reds on Friday night in Fredericton. Acadia will host the StFX X-Men on Friday.Β 

Webb, Peach & Hoyt score for Acadia, Couture with 48 saves

(FREDERICTON, NB) A four-goal second period helped lift the UNB REDS past the Acadia Axemen, 6-3 on Friday night at UNB’s Aitken Centre.Β Β

Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) had two goals and an assist and was named Tim Horton’s Player of the Game as UNB moved to 7-and-0 to start the season.Β

Friday night’s win didn’t come without some adversity for the REDS, who fell behind 3-1 in the first period.Β Β 

Β 

The Axemen burst out of the gates, notching their first goal just 4:39 into the game.Β

Reilly Webb (Stoney Creek, ON) fired a shot that took an unusual bounce off the post and deflected off UNB’s Patrick Kyte’s (Pembroke, ON) stick, he was attempting to clear the puck from the crease, giving Acadia a 1-0 lead.Β

Five minutes later, Acadia extended their lead on a power-play opportunity, thanks to Bailey Peach (Falmouth, NS). He took an excellent pass from Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) and fired it over Samuel Richard’s (Ste. Catherine, QC) glove.Β

UNB managed to respond at 15:24 of the first, when Kade Landry’s (Gowanstown, ON) shot found its way through a screened Thomas Couture (LΓ©vis, QC), closing the gap to 2-1.Β 

Β 

However, Acadia quickly re-established their two-goal lead when Peyton Hoyt (Fredericton, NB) snapped a shot past Richard from the slot, making it 3-1, capping off a first period filled with scoring opportunities.Β

The REDS launched an impressive offensive surge in the second period, finding the back of the net four times to seize a 5-3 lead.Β

It started when Michael Petizian (Mississauga, ON) pounced on a loose puck right in front of the net, igniting the UNB offense 5:55 into the period.Β 

Β 

Five minutes later, Adam McCormick (Waterville, NB) leveled the game, firing a point shot past Couture, knotting the score at 3-3.Β 

Β 

Isaac Nurse (Hamilton, ON) then propelled the REDS ahead at 13:34, going top shelf to secure UNB’s first lead of the game.Β

MacKay added an insurance goal for the REDS in the closing moments, tipping home a blistering shot from the point by Kale McCallum (Rothesay, NB) on the power-play, extending the score to 5-3 with 15 seconds remaining in the period.Β 

Β 

MacKay added an empty net goal at 18:14 of the third period to cement the victory for UNB.Β

Looking ahead, both teams are back in action on Saturday night. The REDS will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 7:00pm. The Axemen travel to Moncton to face the Aigles Bleus at 7:00 pm.Β

Peach with the lone goal for Acadia

WOLFVILLE – The Moncton Aigles Bleus pushed their win streak to four games with a 3-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday night.

Acadia came into the weekend on a two-game win streak, losing both weekend games to their New Brunswick opponents starting with a 5-0 loss to UNB on Friday night.

Jeremy Lapointe scored the only goal of the opening period, putting Moncton up 1-0 with a power play goal 10:33 into the game.

Midway through the second periodΒ Bailey PeachΒ tied the game for Acadia.

Yann-Felix Lapointe scored the game-winning goal 14:14 into the second period, with the insurance marker coming just over two minutes later.

Olivier Adam made 31 saves in the Moncton victory, whileΒ Thomas CoutureΒ made 36 saves in the loss.

Next weekend the two teams meet again on Saturday, puck drop is 4 p.m. Friday night Acadia will face UNB in Fredericton, while Moncton hosts Saint Mary’s. Both games start at 7 p.m.

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axemen were unable to solve the nationally ranked UNB Reds on Friday night as UNB picked up a 5-0 victory to stay undefeated.Β 

The No. 1 ranked team in the country scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods.Β Β 

Brady Gilmour opened the scoring 8:22 into the opening period, with Austen Keating netting a power play goal at the 16:44 mark.Β Β 

Jason Willms and Justin Nolet scored for the Reds in the second frame, with Isaac Nurse adding the fifth goal with just 27 seconds remaining in the third period.Β Β 

Samuel Richard made 20 saves for the shutout, his second of the season.Β Brayden Peters made 31 saves in his first loss as an Axemen.Β 

Acadia is back in action on Saturday night when they host Moncton. Puck drop is 7 p.m.Β Β 

For the Reds, they will battle the second place Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax at 7 p.m.Β 

Zack Jones with a goal and an assist in the victory

HALIFAX, NS – The Acadia Axemen handed Saint Mary’s their first loss of the season, defeating the Huskies 4-2 on Saturday night in Halifax.Β 

The game was part of Saint Mary’s homecoming festivities, and saw the Huskies honour their 1973 National Championship men’s hockey team with a ceremonial puck-drop in front of 600+ fans in attendance at the Dauphinee Centre.Β 

The Axemen were looking to spoil the Huskies party, fresh off a huge 9-2 win over the UPEI Panthers on Friday night. Acadia came out the gates ready to play, peppering the Huskies net with shots, but goaltender Matthew Welsh (Halifax, NS), turned them away early.Β 

Huskies defenceman Ben Roger (Markham, ON) had the best opportunity of the first period for Saint Mary’s, but Axemen goaltender Brayden Peters (Taber. AB) made a nice glove save.Β 

Late in the period Acadia would capitalize on a four-on-three powerplay after Huskies forward Charlie Dafonseca (Thornhill, ON) was sent to the penalty box for interference. Axemen forward Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) was stopped in front, but the rebound landed on the stick of forward Cole Nagy (Saskatoon, SK), who made no mistake, beating Welsh to put the visitors ahead 1-0.Β 

The Axemen would take the one goal lead into the intermission, outshooting the Huskies 17-6 through 20 minutes of play.Β 

Early in the second period, the Huskies pressed for an equalizer but were unable to beat Peters. Acadia would add to their lead just over four minutes into the second, as a scramble in front of the goal saw forward Nicholas Deakin-Poot (Georgetown, ON) bang a rebound past Welsh to double the visitors lead to 2-0.Β 

But the Huskies explosive offence showed their ability to erase a deficit in a hurry, as they would tie it up 2-2 less than a minute later.Β 

On the ensuing faceoff, Huskies defenceman Jaxon Bellamy (Hampton, NB) cycled around goal, dished to his partner Dennis Busby (Oro-Medonte, ON) at the point, who passed it back to Bellamy in the low slot, where he roofed a shot past Peters to cut the deficit to 2-1.Β 

Just 30 seconds later, the Huskies would equalize, as a strange bounce off the faceoff saw the puck deflected up into the crease, where Dafonseca knocked it into the back of the goal to tie the game at 2-2.Β 

Midway through the period, Axemen forward Corson Hopwo (Duncan, BC), hit Huskies defenceman Justin MacPherson (East Gwillimbury, ON) from behind, and was given a four minute double-minor. The Huskies would have several chances to take the lead on the powerplay, but where unable to capitalize.Β 

The game would remain deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the second intermission, with the Axemen outshooting the Huskies 14-11 in the second period.Β 

Five minutes into the third period, Acadia went on the powerplay and scored their second man-advantage marker of the night, as forward Brendan Sellan (Bolton, ON) had his initial shot blocked, but the rebound fell back on his stick and he lifted it past Welsh to put the Axemen up 3-2.Β 

The Axemen would add on to their lead several minutes later, as forward Zack Jones (North Falmouth, MA) stole the puck at the Huskies blueline and walked in untouched, firing a high shot over Welsh to extend the lead to 4-2, which would go down as the final score.Β 

Acadia outshot Saint Mary’s 40-28 on the night, with Brayden Peters stopping 26 shots for the win, while Matt Welsh stopped 36 shots in defeat.Β 

Axemen forward Zack Jones was named Player of the Game with a goal and an assist.Β Β 

The Axemen second straight improves their record to 2-1-0-1 to begin the campaign. Acadia will be back on home ice next weekend, taking on the UNB REDS on Friday and Moncton Aigles Bleus on Saturday.Β 

The Huskies loss drops their record to 3-1-0 on the season. Saint Mary’s will be back one home ice next weekend, as they host the Moncton Aigles Bleues on Saturday, and UNB REDS on Saturday, with puck-drop at 7 p.m. for both games at the Dauphinee Centre.Β Β

Whynot with 5 points in the victory

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axemen found the win column and the back of net easily on Friday night at home has they picked up a 9-2 victory over the UPEI Panthers.Β Β 

Acadia scored three goals in each period, while UPEI scored once in the first and third periods.Β Β 

Ethan Ernst scored the eventual game-winning goal in the final two minutes of the opening period, his first of the night. He finished as the only two-goal scorer of the night.Β 

Kentville’s Cam Whynot had a standout night after not finding the scoresheet in the opening weekend. He scored his first AUS goal 12:22 into the first period, while assisting on four other Axemen goals for a five-point night. Β 

Port Williams’ Brady Burns also had a multi-point night, finishing with three assists. The duo lead Acadia in scoring through three games with five points apiece. Β 

The Panthers goals came from Kurtis Henry in the first to make it a 1-1 game and Noah Sedore in the third, to close the gap at that point to 6-2.Β Β 

Brayden Peters made his first start between the pipes for Acadia, making 30 saves in the win.Β 

The Panthers Joe Ranger made 23 saves in the loss, while Jonah Capriotti made 15 saves in relief. Β 

Saturday night the Axemen are in Halifax to face Saint Mary’s to wrap up their weekend, while UPEI is now off until next Friday night when they host Dalhousie.Β 

Burns scores two in Axemen loss

The Dalhousie Tigers earned their first win of the season with a 4-3 shootout win over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday night in Halifax.Β Β 

The Axemen opened the scoring halfway through the first period. Ethan Ernst (Weyburn, SK) found Brady Burns (Port Williams, NS) with a cross ice pass which Burns put home in the top corner of Nicholas Chenard’s (Tecumseh, ON) net.Β Β 

Dalhousie returned from the first intermission with a fire lit under them. Alec Belanger (Quebec, PQ) pulled the Tigers level just three minutes into the second period off a feed from Evan MacKinnon (Beaverbank, NS).Β Β 

Fifteen minutes later the Tigers went on the powerplay and Belanger got his second of the game off a scramble in front of the Acadia net to put the Tigers up 2-1. The second period would end with the Tigers holding their first lead of the season.Β Β 

Burns opened the scoring in third frame with his second of the game, banking in his own rebound off a feed from Zach Jones (North Falmouth, MA).Β Β 

Late in the frame, Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) broke down the wing with five minutes left in the game and was able to beat Thomas Couture (Levis, QC) with a shot off the post and in. Minutes later Acadia tied it up again, but this time it was Erst getting his first of the season on a breakaway. Β 

Neither team could break the tie in the final minutes of the game, forcing an overtime period. After an uneventful overtime period, the Tigers and Axemen went to a shootout.Β Β 

The Tigers elected to shoot first, sending Gentile out for the open attempt. Gentile found the back of the net and scored the only goal of the shootout, giving the Tigers a 4-3 win and their first points of the season.Β Β 

Alec Belanger was named the player of the game for his two-goal performance.Β 

The Dalhousie Tigers hit the road next weekend for a New Brunswick road trip, visiting UNB on Friday and the Aigles Bleus on Saturday.Β Β 

The Axemen return home to host the UPEI Panthers on Friday at 7pm.Β Β
